Tesla in India: 2025 Price, Models & Booking Process.

Indian electric vehicle (EV) enthusiasts have been eagerly waiting for Tesla's official Indian launch for years now. The US EV giant has indicated its entry on several occasions in the past but delays, regulations, and prohibitively high import duties kept keeping the launch date at bay. Now in 2025, all indications are that Tesla is going to finally launch its long-awaited presence in India. From prices expected to cost, to variants that are likely to hit Indian roads, and how customers can order their Tesla, here's a comprehensive look at what's on the horizon.

Why Tesla Took So Long to Enter India

Tesla's delay was not inadvertent. India, while a rapidly expanding automobile market, poses certain challenges to international electric vehicle producers. India's biggest hurdle has been the over 100% import duty for completely built-up (CBU) electric vehicles. This essentially doubled the price of Tesla vehicles in India, putting them beyond the means of much of its market.

Further, Tesla demanded some policy relaxations and infrastructure upgradations, such as better EV charging infrastructure, that were not immediately available. Meanwhile, the government of India was keen to see Tesla bring in investments for local manufacturing. This resulted in a long stalemate, with both sides negotiating terms for years.

Towards later in 2024, however, things pointed towards a breakthrough. Tesla began to prepare for local homologation of cars, acquired lease showrooms in India's leading cities, and enthusiastically began co-operation with Indian authorities to make the entry easier.

Tesla's Showroom and Service Centers in India

To establish a foothold in India, Tesla has reportedly leased a premium 4,000 sq. ft. space in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) — one of the city’s prime commercial districts. Similar showrooms are expected in New Delhi, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad. These facilities will not only serve as display spaces but also double up as experience centers where customers can learn about EV technology and take test drives.

Aside from sales, Tesla will also open service centers and supercharger stations. Initially limited to metro cities, these will then spread slowly over tier-2 cities once Tesla cars gain traction.

Models to be witnessed in India

Tesla has a great portfolio globally, but the company will most probably start with four best models which are specifically tailored for the premium and luxury segments of the Indian market.

1 - Tesla Model 3

Estimated Price: ₹60 – 70 lakh

Highlights: World's most affordable Tesla sedan, Model 3 will definitely be the sales volume driver for Tesla in India. It offers a premium EV experience, clutter-free interior, sophisticated driver aids, and an estimated range of approximately 500 km from a single charge.

2 - Tesla Model Y

Estimated Price: ₹70 – 90 lakh

Highlights: An electric crossover SUV with a shared platform for the Model 3. Renowned for its spacious interiors and panoramic glass roof, the Model Y is perfect for Indian families looking for a premium EV.

3 - Tesla Model S

Estimated Price: ₹1.50 crore

Highlights: A performance luxury sedan with blistering acceleration, amply sized range, and cutting-edge features. The Model S will appeal to enthusiasts looking for speed and technology.

4 - Tesla Model X

Approximate Price: ₹2 crore

Highlights: The flagship SUV with falcon-wing doors, spacious interiors, and industry-best performance. Even though premium-priced, it offers the best in luxury and design.

Booking Process for Tesla in India

Though Tesla has not formally opened bookings so far in May 2025, insiders opine that the process will follow a similar pattern as Tesla's international booking system after launch. Here's a step-by-step preview of how Indians will presumably book their Tesla:

Step 1: Go to the Official Tesla India Site

Prospective customers will need to go to the India-dedicated page on Tesla's official site after it goes live.

Step 2: Choose Your Desired Model

Explore existing models — Model 3, Model Y, Model S, or Model X.

Step 3: Personalize Your Vehicle

Choose exterior colors, interior trim, wheels, and extra packages such as Enhanced Autopilot or Full Self-Driving (if offered in India).

Step 4: Pay Reservation Amount

A reservation amount (approximately ₹1 – 2 lakh) will confirm your reservation.

Step 5: Confirmation & Wait for Delivery

You will receive confirmation of the booking via email with estimated delivery schedules and next steps.

Tesla is most likely to offer online and in-showroom booking to enhance accessibility.

Expected Delivery Timelines

While the homologation and installation of infrastructure are in progress, initial deliveries of Tesla vehicles in India would be expected around late 2025. Early customers can expect delivery slots between 3 to 6 months of the booking date depending on model availability and production lots.

Price Expectations: Will Teslas Be Affordable in India?

Tesla cars are high-end products worldwide, and Indian prices will be proportionate. While Tesla has indicated its desire to launch locally manufactured cars in the future, models at the initial phase will arrive as CBUs, inviting heavy import tariffs.

Here's a brief price overview based on current market estimates:

Model Estimated Price (Ex-Showroom)

Cost Model 3 ₹60 – 70 lakh

Cost Model Y ₹70 – 90 lakh

Cost Model S ₹1.50 crore

Cost Model X ₹2 crore

In the near future, if Tesla sets up a manufacturing unit or assembly plant in India, these rates could see a significant decrease and become more friendly to the masses.

Charging Infrastructure Plans

One of the biggest strengths for Tesla is its supercharging network, and in India too, it will start with Mumbai, Delhi, and Bengaluru fast-charging points and then spread to other cities gradually. Even partnerships with incumbent EV infrastructure players are in the mix to speed up the process.

Home charging solutions will also be available for Tesla vehicles, and the company will provide installation support to customers opting for this amenity.

Final - Thoughts

Tesla's official foray into India is less about selling electric cars and more about becoming a milestone in the transformation of India's sustainable mobility. With premium features, innovative technology, and a robust brand name, Tesla stands to be a favorite among India's high-end EV buyers and technophiles.

The prices, though premium, reflect the global luxury positioning of Tesla vehicles. However, as infrastructure matures and local manufacturing is rolled out, we can notice a shift toward more affordable variants.

For now, Indian fans of Tesla will have to wait until 2025 when their electric dreams will finally arrive on Indian roads.
